Rick Tharp  (1952 – 2005)

Tharp sitting

Rick Tharp was the “de facto” designer for the town of Los Gatos. He came to town in 1974, near the start of the Art Bridge era. If you look at the two cats back to back painted on the wall of the Penthouse apartments at Main Street and College, are you aware that is Rick’s work? When you read the LG Weekly every Tuesday, are you aware that its masthead is Rick’s work? The Town of Los Gatos, the  Los  Gatos  School  District,  town  street signs and light posts are garnished with Rick’s work. From Le Boulanger Valeriano’s, Steamers, the Maid’s Quarters, the Wooden Horse, Domus, Bears in the Woods, etc., etc., etc. in town, all these identities were Rick’s work, as well  as  the  Museums  of  Los  Gatos,  and  I quote from one of his other biographers:
“It was to organizations in this community that he often donated his design services, or provided work at reduced rates. A major identity project for the Los Gatos Museum Association came with a 75% fee discount.” (from Jeff Fisher, “An introduction — and farewell tip of the hat — to Mr. Tharp”)
